New start-up visa scheme for tech entrepreneurs will be launched in Spring 2019
The UK government has announced a new visa scheme which will replace the Tier 1 (Graduate Entrepreneur) category and allow applicants who are endorsed by a university or a business sponsor to start a business in the UK.
The scheme will be launched in Spring 2019 and is designed to attract entrepreneurs of all types, not just graduates. The announcement during London Tech Week is in response to reports that entrepreneurs are looking elsewhere to establish their businesses.
Although this is a move in the right direction, it falls short of addressing the issues facing tech companies in securing visas for skilled IT workers.
Approximately 2,000 tech workers with job offers in the UK have been denied visas since November 2017. It remains to be seen how the UK government will deal with the cap which has been met for the past six months and is therefore impacting hiring and growth plans for many businesses.
